What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Have you been involved in a highly distressing experience? Is it still affecting your daily life, even though it happened in the past? Do you struggle with nightmares or flashbacks?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a complex disorder that involves having been exposed to a traumatic experience and then persistently re-experiencing the event through flashbacks, nightmares and memories.

It is estimated that around 7% of the population will struggle with PTSD during their life. Women are more likely to be dealing with the disorder.

Although closely associated with people who have served in the armed services, people from all walks of life may have PTSD.

There are lots of experiences that can be at the root of PTSD, including having been involved in a serious accident, being abused, being in a combat situation or witnessing death or injury.

What are the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

PTSD can create emotional symptoms, changes to the way you think, as well as physical discomfort. Symptoms of PTSD can include:

  • Nightmares
  • Unwanted upsetting memories
  • Flashbacks
  • Trauma-related thoughts and feelings
  • Negative thoughts
  • Low motivation
  • Feeling isolated
  • More “on edge”
