Frequently Asked Questions

Nothing seems to help with my stress, is this course right for me?

During the workshops we will cover a lot of different topics. Some will be familiar to you but a lot will be new or unfamiliar. We’ll also make sure that you understand why certain strategies are helpful and talk about how you can start to commit to making changes in your life now.

I see that the course includes hypnosis, is it safe?

Hypnosis is completely safe. It is a tool that can be used for a variety of issues and conditions. It is one of the most researched therapy techniques and the evidence shows that it is good at reducing stress and anxiety. Hypnosis is really just a state of focused attention, of concentrating on the suggestions that are made. It is particularly good at creating a state of deep relaxation.

I am already seeing my doctor for stress (or other issues), can I still come along?

These sessions are going to be helpful for most people, because they include lots of practical tools that you can start to use in your life on a regular basis. However, it is not a replacement for medical treatment. Please call me (in confidence) first if you have any concerns, so that we can whether the course is suitable for you.

Do I have to practice at home?

The course is split across 2 weeks so that you get the chance to practice in between sessions. Just as you won’t become a better guitar player if you don’t practice in between lessons, you won’t get better at managing your stress if you are not willing to practice the strategies taught.


About Ian Guest

My name is Ian Guest and I am an anxiety coach. I take an evidence-based approach to helping people with stress & anxiety, which means that the techniques and ideas I incorporate have been researched and proven to be effective.

Like many people, I have dealt with stress and anxiety in my life. I know what it’s like to be overwhelmed by negative thoughts and feelings. Through my own research and experience with clients, I have gained a greater understanding of the causes of stress & anxiety and what helps in their management. I apply what I have learnt in my own life and I can teach you strategies and techniques that will make your life more enjoyable and rewarding.

I work with clients on an individual basis through Wigan Anxiety Centre. I also deliver training in stress management and resilience to businesses and organisations through my training company, Resilient Minds. In addition, I also teach hypnotherapy and counselling skills for Chrysalis Training, a national provider of therapy training.

Qualifications and Training

I hold a Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), awarded by the National Council for Hypnotherapy.  The HPD is accredited by NCFE as having measurable learning outcomes that meet a level 4 qualification. It also meets the learning outcomes of the National Occupational Standards for “Complementary and Alternative Healthcare – Hypnotherapy”. This means that I am currently working towards the highest national standards for hypnotherapists.

I hold a Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Counselling Skills accredited through the National Hypnotherapy Society. I have also completed the Foundation Certificate in Evidence-Based Hypnotherapy at the UK College of Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy.

Background

I am also a fully qualified guidance practitioner, holding a Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance and the Diploma for Connexions Personal Advisers. I worked for Connexions and the Careers Service for 15 years, both as an adviser and as a manager. In 2014 I left my post as Team Leader at  Wigan Careers Service to focus on helping people with stress and anxiety using a range of techniques, including hypnosis and mindfulness.
